History of Rock Climbing as a Sport
The history of modern-day rock climbing as a sport can be traced back to two Frenchmen Michel-Gabriel Paccard and Jacques Balmat who climbed Mont Blanc in 1786.
After that others began to show interest in rock climbing as a sport and the first mountaineering club, the Alpine Club, was established in 1857.
Where to Go Rock Climbing in Nigeria
Sure by now we’ve all read novels and watched movies about people climbing famous mountains like Mount Everest in the Himalayans and Mount Kilimanjaro in East Africa.
But what if you don’t have the time to travel far to experience rock climbing?

Here in Nigeria, you don’t need to travel out to experience the thrill of rock climbing.
If you’re the adventurous type (like most rock climbers), you can go to the famous Idanre Hills in Ondo State.
Some other hills in Nigeria worth exploring include the Kufena Hill, Milliken Hill, Oke Marie Hills, Rolling Hills of Okigwe, Shere Hills, Somorika Hills, Three Sisters Hill and Olumo Rock.
These hills are worth exploring whether or not you’re a keen rock climber. If only for the sake of their being tourist attractions.

If for any reason you can’t take on any of the hills in Nigeria mentioned above, don’t despair.
There is still an alternative to outdoor rock climbing in the form of our

History of the Rock Climbing Wall
A climbing wall is an artificial wall constructed with grips for your hands and feet, used either for indoor or outdoor climbing.
Some climbing walls are produced from bricks, plywood or manufactured steel and aluminium. Others are climbing walls built from pre-made fibreglass panels, textured fibreglass walls and inflatables.
There is also the mobile rock climbing wall that goes from one place to another.
Who invented the rock climbing wall? The first artificial rock climbing wall was created in the UK by Don Robinson in 1964.
He created the rock climbing wall so that experienced climbers could stay in shape by having the means to practice their sport all year round without worrying about the weather.
With the advent of indoor climbing, weather, seasonal difficulties, and the ever busy schedules of people are no longer obstacles to the growth and enjoyment of the sport by its practitioners.
In Europe and the US, the proliferation of indoor climbing gyms has helped to make the sport of climbing popular and more accessible to people.
